Welcome to the new Albion Basin

This month your blogger met with Alta’s new (and second ever) marketing director, Brandon Ott. Brandon’s been on the job for a couple months now and we sat down to discuss the big changes in the works. Of these there were many.

For the first time in Alta’s 80-year history they’re running a summer lift for hikers and families to enjoy and gain access to Albion Basin. “Albion Basin has been over loved and our plan is intended to encourage responsible hiking while maintaining the basin’s pristine condition,” he stated when we met at his office June 12th.

Running Sunnyside lift on weekends and holidays is only part of Alta’s ongoing commitment to stewardship of the mountain so many love. To mitigate the continued enthusiasm for visiting our wildflowers and wildlife during the off season the resort has agreed to manage access to the summer road and control parking at the top of Sunnyside lift. A $6 per car charge applies for day use but space is limited. Overflow parking will be the upper lot by Albion Grill. This is a welcome change to the often heavy traffic on weekends.

Beginning June 30th and running through September 3rd Sunnyside lift is open from 9-6 weekends and holidays. Prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children. They will also have mountain hosts at the top and bottom of the lift to answer questions about flora and fauna and responsible hiking. To ensure no stomach is left behind, the Albion Grill will be open for the same hours but also 11-7 weekdays.

Of interest to Canyon Blog is the Alta Summer Music, each Saturday from 3-6 outside the Albion Grill. After that summer stroll to Cecret Lake catch the chair (ride prices cover both directions) to hear bluegrass, folk and country rock as the sun sets behind Superior and the light mellows.

Your correspondent left the meeting with the continued strong impression that what matters most to the dedicated folks at Alta Ski Lift Company is responsible stewardship of the land.
