The snow continues to drop in Little Cottonwood Canyon and the skiing is beyond compare. And by that, your correspondent does mean anywhere. Readers of this space are only too familiar with the superiority of Wasatch powder and the fact that leasing one of our properties puts you into a skin-in ski-out experience not available anywhere else.

To prove that point your faithful investigative journalist is winging his way to Austria and Norway to compare this season’s snow with other world class destinations. Such is his dedication to his profession, but he digresses and will report back on that when he returns next month.

In the meantime, Canyon Blog took the opportunity to spend a day on Snowbird and Alta stopping and taking in the view from some of his favorite slopes. All of these shots were taken from easily accessed groomers with no hiking required.

The point of the day’s outing wasn’t merely to snap shots to make you jealous or to entice you to return for another visit while the snow is the best it’s been in years. Rather, it’s to suggest once you do arrive that when you’re midway down your favorite Supreme or Gad II lift that you stop and simply take in the view. So often when we’re keen to get in as much vertical or fully explore all the available terrain, we can miss the simple beauty of what lures us out into the white in the first place. Even a fully packed holiday weekend can resonate with absolute silence if you stop in the right place. But you have to find that place for yourself…

The other thing about a record snowfall year such as this is just how different the mountain skis. As someone who spends 100+ days per year with sticks on his feet, Canyon Blog can attest to just how wonderful skiing a big snow year can be. Chutes, gullies, that familiar ridge (and even groomers) all take on a different feel. Dropping off into the unknown becomes less about risk assessment and more about “send it!”

Till your correspondent returns with his report, enjoy the photos and please come out and keep the mountains fully skied, because somebody has to do it. And when you do take some time out and simply take it all in…
